| Written by Dr. Alvin Newman, M.D., FRCPC, FACP, FACG. Published by Robert Rose, Inc., 2011. Description: |
| Over 200,000 Canadians have symptoms of irritable
bowel syndrome (IBS), yet it often takes an inordinate amount of time to
receive a proper diagnosis. While they are subjected to unnecessary procedures
and diagnostics, they are experiencing tremendously challenging symptoms that
have a dramatic impact on their enjoyment of life. The symptoms typically
include bloating, constipation, diarrhea, chronic abdominal pain and functional
dyspepsia (the medical term for a condition that causes an upset stomach or
pain or discomfort in the upper belly, near the ribs). The Essential IBS Book provides comprehensive information on the condition of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and functional dyspepsia (FD). Dr. Alvin Newman discusses the symptoms in a thorough yet approachable manner, including the impact of these symptoms, diagnostic tools, diseases, conditions and complications associated with both conditions. Equally vital is integral information on managing both IBS and FD through lifestyle changes, drug therapy and dietary therapy. There is also extensive information on current IBS research and self-help for patients in the form of support groups and reliable internet sources. About the author: Dr. Alvin Newman, M.D., FRCPC, FACP, FACG, was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and trained in internal medicine at Ohio State University and in gastroenterology at John Hopkins University. He is a gastroenterologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, Ontario, where he has a special interest in IBS. He is also a professor of medicine in the University of Toronto's Faculty of Medicine. |
